Description

This beautiful view of the French port of Toulon shows the massive dockyard and harbor facilities from the ‘other side of the food stores’, according to the subtitle near the bottom. French naval strength is emphasized through the presence of several ships of the line, while robust commercial activity reflects the (allegedly) strong economy amid the ongoing Seven Years’ War.

The view was based on a series of fifteen paintings of French ports commissioned by Louis XV and executed in oil by Joseph Vernet. This copperplate engraved recreation was created by Charles-Nicolas Cochin and Jacques-Philippe Le Bas and published in 1762.
