Description

This lovely map shows the historic French region of Valois in tremendous detail. The distance from Creil (lower left) to Chateau-Thierry (center right) is only about 50 miles, allowing for a wonderful visual record of the region in the mid-17th century. Other cities within the image include Meaxu, Soissons, and Compiegne.

The region is notable as the namesake to the second line of the Capetian dynasty, and the home of numerous French Dukes (and eventually, kings) in the 13th – 16th centuries.

Published in Amsterdam by Jan Jansson in 1639, with French text on the verso, as well as a small woodblock print of a cherub holding two cornucopias.
