This lovely map of China was published around 1720 by Pieter Van der Aa, for issue in his Nouveau Theatre du Monde. It shows a large territory in east Asia from the coast of Vietnam in the lower left, to Korea in the upper right; including the islands of Hainan, Taiwan, and portions of Japan. The Great Wall is prominently featured across the top of the map, and a decorative cartouche in the lower right highlights Chinese architecture and commercial goods.

At the time of publication, the Qing Dynasty was ascendant and had consolidated much of the map’s area under the emperor’s rule. It would continue to expand westward for the next several decades, and by the end of the 18th century, the Qing Empire would encompass nearly 1/3 of the world’s population.
