Description

This detailed steel engraved map was published in New York by Alvin Jewett Johnson in 1868. It shows the highlights from the Peninsula Campaign of 1862, fought between the Union forces of George B. McClellan and the Confederate troops under Robert E. Lee.

Crossed swords mark the many engagements fought in the campaign including Fair Oaks/Seven Pines, White Oak Bridge, Mechanicsville, Malvern Hill, and even the encounter between the Monitor and Merrimac off Hampton Roads. Arrows follow Federal advances and retreats while other labels show depth soundings, railroads, lighthouses, marshy areas, army camps, artillery batteries, and other details of particular military interest.

Though the Confederate Army suffered more casualties during this terrible campaign, they succeeded in depriving the Union from taking Richmond.
