Description

This attractive steel-engraved and hand-colored map provides a detailed overview of five Western states and territories in the years immediately following the American Civil War. Counties and districts within Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and California are carefully highlighted in vibrant hues, while fine hachures depict topographic detail.

A fascinating variety of toponyms identify Native American tribes, settlements, geographic features, landmarks, forts, local industries, and more. Several transportation routes and explorer’s paths are noted, including the proposed line of the Transcontinental Railroad, the Pony Express, and Fremont’s expedition.

Dated 1864 near the bottom of the sheet, but this particular example was originally published in 1866 as part of Alvin Jewitt Johnson’s Illustrated Family Atlas. Version 4.0 on Ira Lourie’s Johnson Map Project, the first to name Yavapai County.
