Description

A Frisconian Field Guide to the United States is the ultimate product of a deep friendship between Joe Talbot and Jimmie Fails, natives of San Francisco who experienced firsthand the Bay Area’s meteoric development of the 2000s. Fails was forced from his family’s historic home in the Fillmore District after the death of his grandfather, resulting in an upbringing of foster care and public housing. He met Talbot during high school, where the pair began making short films.

The Last Black Man in San Francisco, a semi-fictionalized biography of Fails’ life, premiered in 2019 to critical acclaim. The highs and lows of the gentrification process are touched upon across the map, which was released in conjunction with the film. Dozens of vignettes represent landmarks across a spectrum of ten different categories that include Filming Locations, RIP Spots, Joe & Jimmie History, Historical Movie Theaters, and Randos & Oddities From Decades Past. Includes a folding booklet with twelve recommended walking tours and the original envelope, composing the entire ‘Field Guide’.
