Description

This beautiful antique print shows the European conceptions of Japanese dress, while very little was known about the isolated Asian nation. A man and female stand elegantly at rest, wearing flowing (presumably silk) robes, with a pagoda in the background.

The print was originally published in 1683 in Paris as part of Alain Manesson Mallet’s monumental Description de l’Univers – one of the most influential works of the 17th century.
