Description
This engaging poster map offers a relatively basic topographic overview of portions of Britain’s East Midlands, the setting of Sir Walter Scott’s most successful novel, Ivanhoe: A Romance (first published in 1819). Geography is presented as an afterthought to the medieval pageantry and drama encountered by the book’s iconic characters, which include Robin Hood, Richard the Lionheart, and King John. Various locations relevant to the plot are identified, including a large depiction of Torquilstone Castle on the left side of the sheet.
Illustrated by Everett Henry and published in Cleveland in 1958 by the Harris-Intertype Corporation. According to the Osher Map Library,
Harris-Intertype Corporation of Cleveland, Ohio, published a dozen pictorial maps for their calendars in the 1950s and early 1960s to advertise the firm’s high quality color printing presses. Commercial artist Edward Everett Henry designed several “portrait maps,” all showing scenes from classic American and British novels. He mastered the difficult challenge of combining map and image.”
