It’s a Dog’s World

…And we’re just living in it!

This fun world map showcasing Man’s Best Friend was illustrated by the talented artist Don Langeneckert and copyrighted in 1968 by the St. Louis-based Ralston Purina Company. The poster was issued as a promotional piece, compliments of the dog food company – its iconic checkerboard logo can be seen in the lower left.

A colorful, but somewhat odd and abstract, political map forms the base of the image. The U.A.R. is the only country labeled in the entirety of Africa, though the author made careful national distinctions across Southeast Asia (with the exception of Korea). Dozens of illustrations of popular dog types are laid on top of their respective locations of origin. From the poodle to the greyhound, many of the world’s most iconic breeds are briefly described in the lower left.
