Description

This fascinating broadsheet, signed W. Seghers in the lower right, was published in Amsterdam around 1935 by Patria N.V. With text in French and Flemish, it was issued to justify and celebrate Italy’s impending aggression against the independent Empire of Ethiopia.

The central map presents the political status of the eastern Mediterranean and northeast Africa, emphasizing colonial status in the latter. Italian possessions are colored in red, with Abyssinian territory in yellow. Photos of the opposing leaders, Haile Selassie and Benito Mussolini, are shown. Images from their respective militaries highlight the technological imbalances that would play a critical role in the impending conflict. Two quotes from Mussolini praising the power of fascist forces are given at the top of the page, removing any shred of impartiality from the production.
