Description
Showing the Iowa and Wisconsin territories well before statehood (1846 and 1848, respectively), this detailed map only depicts the most populated areas of each; found along the coastline of Lake Michigan and the navigable rivers of the region. Even still, the white settlements and forts are scattered and likely reflect a minority among the numerous Native American tribes and villages labeled within the image.
An inset map in the lower right shows the upper portions of Wisconsin to the Lake of the Woods and the headwaters of the Mississippi River. The map was engraved by George Boyton and published in Boston by Thomas Bradford for his 1838 (first) edition of An Illustrated Atlas, Geographical, Statistical, And Historical, Of The United States And The Adjacent Countries.
