Description
“Travelers are CAUTIONED AGAINST STARTING THEIR TRIP WITHOUT COMPLETING BEFOREHAND ALL ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE SOVIET PORTION OF THEIR ITINERARY, INCLUDING THE SOVIET TOURIST VISA.” – Text, verso. This eye-catching map of the Soviet Union was published by the New York office of Intourist, Inc. – the official travel agency for use by foreigners wanting to visit the country under Stalin’s rule. Railways and airways, highlighted in red, connect various cities, with a particular emphasis on border stations.
Accompanying photographs reflect the ethnic diversity of the Soviet Union, while inset plans offer a simple route map of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and a suggested 4.5-day itinerary of Europe to Iran via the U.S.S.R. General travel information is provided on the verso, as well as twenty-five possible tours (with accompanying rates) for the audience to consider for the 1939 season.
