Description

This bustling view of Chicago’s famous State Street was published as the cover image to the January 25, 1913 edition of Harper’s Weekly. It was one of several issues exploring industrial aspects of various cities across the United States.

Chicago was certainly a manufacturing and transportation juggernaut at the time of publication, but with the adoption of the Burnham Plan less than a decade prior (1096), it also understood the importance of beauty and proper infrastructure. The verso of the print features a view of the New Grand Central Station in New York City, open to the public just a few weeks after the issue was published.
