Indian Legends

The history of prominent American landmarks, according to indigenous mythology.

This brightly colored pictorial map highlights the outdoor wonders of the United States. The geography of various regions across the country is approximated by stylized views of specific landmarks and natural features, including Crater Lake, Pipestone Quarry, Mt. Shasta, Bryce Canyon, Spanish moss, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Accompanying text offers a summary of the related Native American mythology for each site. The anonymously created piece, possibly issued as a placemat, was published by the Pontiac Motor Company around 1970.

Pontiac issued a number of Native American-themed promotional posters during the second half of the 20th century, intended for distribution at local dealers. Apart from the association with the company name (Pontiac was a famous Ottawa war chief), the advertisements may have been issued to co-opt public interest in Native American identity, which was undergoing a transformation during a period of federal efforts at assimilation.
