Description
This fascinating and complex transportation map shows the vast network of the Illinois Traction System, a predecessor to the Illinois Terminal Railroad and affiliate of the Illinois Power & Light Company. Various interurban lines, as well as street railways facilitating resource distribution, are noted throughout using a series of symbols outlined across four different legends.
The image presents a distorted view of Illinois in order to present all the necessary information, and even then it’s difficult to read some of the various stops crammed along each route.
The ITS reached its greatest expanse in 1928, but the Great Depression forced a reorganization into the Illinois Terminal Railroad Company, which focused more on freight than passenger service.
The map was published in the May 10, 1924 issue of The Traffic World. Issued in Chicago by The Traffic Service Corporation.
