Description

This detailed transportation map of the greater Chicagoland area was published by Rand McNally in 1926 to accompany a guidebook on the Eucharistic Congress that took place in the city that year. Considered ‘the largest religious meeting in the history of Catholic America,’ the event drew over 750,000 attendees to the closing ceremonies.

Fittingly, only the rail lines of the Illinois Central (the primary sponsor of the publication), transportation hubs, Mundelein (host site), and churches are highlighted in bright red. The robust system of parks and boulevards, the city’s ‘Emerald Necklace’, is colored in green.

A variety of lines identified in the legend immediately below the title indicate the variety of local transportation options available to attendees of the ecclesiastical congress. Railroads, bus lines, interurban lines, surface lines, and elevated lines are all depicted.
