Description

“Wherever you live the convenience afforded by Illinois Central Electric in delivering you at World’s Fair gates should be your first consideration in choosing your transportation to and from the Fair.” [Text, lower center]

This uncommon and ephemeral map was distributed by the Illinois Central Railroad in 1933 to encourage ridership to and from the Century of Progress Exposition. The proximity of IC transportation depots to the various entrances is heavily emphasized throughout.

A reproduction of the official map at the top of the page shows a detailed overview of the fairgrounds running along the Lakefront between the Loop and Burnham Park. Over 150 different buildings, exhibits, and attractions are numbered and identified according to the legend in the lower right. Quite a bit to see with the 50-cent admission, though only those amusements marked with an asterisk are included with the ticket.

Immediately adjacent to the key is a map by Rand McNally that shows the Illinois Central electric interurban lines running through the city’s South Side and its connections. A fare schedule, with information on departure times and reduced rates for the fair, is also provided.

Likely issued as a broadsheet directly by the Illinois Central to consumers, as the verso is blank with the exception of a handwritten address and 1.5 cent postal stamp.
