Description

This interesting brochure was published in the early 1930s by the Tourism Department of the city of Rio de Janeiro. A central map shows the region around Guanabara Bay, including various populated islands and a basic street plan of the capital city itself (the capital was moved to Brasilia in 1960). The principal islands of the district are labeled according to a key in the lower right.

Photographs around the border highlight many of the area’s most spectacular attractions; including a sweeping view of the bay, the beautiful isles, and calm waters. The verso presents an extensive extract from the Italian aviator Italo Balbo’s book in which he relates the charms of Rio de Janeiro. It’s provided in four languages – Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and English – and one notable excerpt reads “Perhaps God, creating the Bay of Rio de Janeiro, desired to show that art descends from Him.”

Balbo led a squadron of seaplanes across the Atlantic to Brazil in 1930/1931 to showcase Mussolini’s Regia Aeronautica and increase Italy’s prestige worldwide. The brochure was likely issued shortly after the 1931 publication of “Stormi in volo sull’oceano”.
