Description

After watching Germany incorporate Austria and most of Czechoslovakia into the Third Reich, Italy’s Benito Mussolini began to feel the need to exercise his independent authority as a member of the Pact of Steel. He had long set his eyes on neighboring Albania and on April 7th, 1939, Italy invaded. The conflict was brief, lasting only five days, and saw the Kingdom of Albania subjected as a protectorate until 1943.

This detailed topographic map was published shortly after Albania’s incorporation into the Italian Empire. It shows state borders, settlements of various sizes, the transportation network, and archaeological sites.

Designed by Giovanni Dossena and published in 1939 by Nuovo Istituto Italiano d’Arti Grafiche in Bergamo.
