If You Were the Only Girl in the World and I was the Only Passport

The world has been turned upside down.

“Anyone who has travelled out of England has experienced something of the bureaucratic bullshit involved every time your cross a border, and that you very quickly learn that movement across this earth is not a right, but a favour unwillingly granted.”

This upside-down map was designed by Mike Moore to accompany an article on peace activist Garry Davis, written by Mike Zwerin and published in a 1972 issue of Oz magazine. Davis renounced his U.S. citizenship at the American embassy in Paris in 1948, declaring himself a ‘citizen of the world.’ He saw national borders as the root cause of global war (omitted from the map) and encouraged the establishment of a unifying political organization with authority (and electoral participation) worldwide.

Oz was a prominent British ‘underground’ youth magazine, published in London from 1967 to 1973, that championed subjects like drug use, radical politics, sexual liberation, popular music, and anti-establishment dissent. Known for its groundbreaking visual design and contributions from figures like Germaine Greer and Robert Crumb, the magazine served as an important, and often provocative, mouthpiece for the counterculture movement.
