Description
This lively view of Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood was issued about 100 years after the south side community was annexed into the city (1889). The area is shown as distinctly apart, with a wall of trees and the waters of Lake Michigan separating it from a minimalized skyline in the upper right.
Dozens of buildings are illustrated and often accompanied by information and telephone numbers for local companies, offering a contemporary snapshot of the small-business economy in the late 1980s. Further ads are noted on a number of hot-air balloons, though these craft are not often seen in the Chicago area. Other local landmarks include the University of Chicago, Rockefeller Chapel, the DuSable Museum of African-American History, and the Museum of Science and Industry.
Designed and illustrated by Timothy Shedelbower and published in Chicago in 1987 by Ranlee Publishing, Inc. Sponsored by the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce.
