Description

This tremendous color lithographed city plan of Des Moines, Iowa shows the ‘Hartford of the West’ in the midst of a period of development and growth emblematic of the City Beautiful movement in the early 20th century. The construction of prominent public buildings, shaded boulevards, and other urban amenities corresponded with the progressive social reforms of the era. It was hoped that renewed and beautified city centers would improve the living conditions of the lower classes while providing cultural and educational opportunities for the middle and upper echelons of society.

Huebinger’s map is representative of these aims, showing densely concentrated areas in orange that contrast sharply with the public outdoor spaces (parks and cemeteries) and undeveloped land in green. Concentric circles radiate in one-mile increments from the city center at the confluence of the Raccoon and Des Moines Rivers and primary transportation routes (steam railways, streets, and interurban lines) are noted. The image also outlines and identifies a number of important structures ranging from schools, transportation depots, hospitals and churches to more unique examples like the state fairgrounds, Drake University, City Hall, and state capitol.

The map is attached to the back cover of a 32-page guidebook to Des Moines. It includes a number of attractive contemporary advertisements, a brief history of the city, a street index, and lists of various locations of interest. Designed and copywritten in 1910 by Melchoir Huebinger. Published in Des Moines by the Iowa Publishing Company (also owned by Huebinger).
