Description
This ‘Traveler’s Guide to Historical Sites on the Irvine Ranch’ was compiled by cartographer Alberto Rampone, with substantive ‘polymathy’ input by Jim Sleeper, a prominent Southern California historian. It was published as a keepsake edition of Vol. III No. 1 of the Rancho San Joaquin Gazette, a historical publication started by Sleeper in 1969.
The image shows a simple overview of the northern half of the Irvine Ranch, occupied largely by the Santa Ana Mountains. Topography is depicted in hachure and 50 different locations of interest are numbered within and described in the outer margins. Humor is intertwined with history, as noted by the tongue-in-cheek warning at the top of the page.
