Description

This ephemeral program, printed in both Hindi and English, was published in 1927 to accompany the ceremonial laying of the cornerstone to a new Hindu orphanage near Wadhwan Camp in British India. The structure was part of a larger planned ashram complex and designed to “train its inmates physically, mentally and morally as to enable them when they grow up and leave the Ashram, to be self-respecting and self-supporting members of Society.”

The organization sponsoring the construction was apparently undergoing financial difficulties, as part of the text relays an appeal for funding additional buildings like dormitories, kitchens, store rooms, and more. Cost estimates are provided, and a map of the proposed facility is affixed to the last page.

Somewhere between 1 and 5 million Indians had died of starvation and malnutrition-related diseases about a quarter century prior to publication, as victims of the famine of 1899–1900. A further 75,000 Indian soldiers perished fighting for the British Army during World War I.
