Description

The name Hindostan has taken on a number of geographical, cultural, and historical context across the ages. Generally, it’s meant to include the entire Indian subcontinent, especially with European cartographers. In the case of the British, the term is often emblematic of India prior to its ‘acquisition’ by the British East India Company.

I find no references to the company, it’s property, or otherwise colonized territory on this map, published in 1835 by T.G. Bradford. Even so, at the time of publication, nearly the entire subcontinent was under the authority of the British Crown through its representatives in the company. As an American, Bradford presumably had less political interest in depicting India as under British authority than his fellow cartographers in London.
