Description

This fascinating road map captures a number of details that highlight the rudimentary system of automobile travel available throughout the United States prior to World War II. Roads are identified according to their surface composition (improved, graded and earth) and labeled individually according to a legend in the center of the sheet. Accompanying text provides further information on how to use the guide, including the various Authorized Map Stations noted throughout the image.

The map was published by the Mid-West Map Company of Aurora, Missouri and was part of a nationwide service dedicated to coast to coast motor tourism. Text on the verso includes the amenities offered by the various map stations, as well as advertisements for the firm. “Stop at an Authorized Guide and Map Station in Practically Any Town in the United States and Get a Mid-West Map Free.”
