Highroads to Happiness

Pemex, the common name for Petróleos Mexicanos, is the state owned petroleum company created in 1938 as a result of Mexico’s nationalization of its oil industry. The company created a non-profit branch dedicated to promoting automobile travel within the country called the Pemex Travel Club, who issued this lovely map of Mexico.

It highlights paved roads between the U.S. border at Laredo to Mexico City and includes numerous illustrations reflecting Mexico’s culture vibrancy available along the route. Accompanying text in the adjacent panel and on the verso praises the modern infrastructure, readily available amenities, safety and low cost that makes a road trip to Mexico a literal “high road to happiness.”
