This map is a somewhat clumsy representation of Visscher’s religious map of Canaan, designed to be published as a fold out map bound within a Bible (as confirmed by the Dutch text on the verso). The map shows the area of Jesus’ travels from the New Testament, and includes a host of relevant biblical, political and historical details. Information pertaining to specific stories, such as the travels of Paul and the wandering of the Israelites, is also provided to aid in the religious understanding of the devotee. An elaborate scene on the bottom of the image shows two inset views of the birth and crucifixion, while the resurrection is shown in abstract as Jesus bursts forth from the title cartouche, knocking over onlookers nearby.
