Celebrating nearly 90 years of Hershey, Pennsylvania.

This colorful pictorial map of Hershey, Pennsylvania, was designed by Karl Downie, colored by Suzi, and published in 1992 by Keystone Cartoon Maps. Because of the town’s inseparable connection with the litigious chocolate company, a bevy of legal notices and trademarks is listed in the lower right corner. The vibrant aesthetic mimics the archetypal “city maps” of the 1980s and 1990s that integrated local businesses, commercial artists, and specialized publication firms.

A series of illustrated vignettes showcases Hershey’s economy and industry, depicting a variety of restaurants, professional services, hotels, and retailers in a cartoonish style. Area attractions are prominently featured, including the Hershey factory, Hersheypark, Hotel Hershey, Hershey Gardens, and the Hershey Bears – notice a pattern? Trivia tidbits and product characters are scattered throughout, providing further advertising for the town’s corporate patron saint of chocolate.
