Description

This interesting schematic map covers portions of the modern-day countries of Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, and according to the title, is focused on the region’s mountainous topography. The Black Sea can be seen in the upper left-hand corner and a portion of the Caspian Sea can be seen along the right of the sheet.

Major geographic features like lakes, rivers, and mountain ranges are individually labeled. Contour lines are shown rather crudely, and only provide a basic impression of the rugged geography. The two highest peaks, Mt. Aragats and Mt. Ararat are named and their corresponding elevations are provided, both within a margin of error of less than 1%.  Because of the “unsophisticated” style of the map, it was likely used as a teaching aid for school children in Soviet Armenia.
