Seven maps in one, this page from a Colton atlas shows the Hawaiian Islands as they were surveyed by the U.S. Exploring Expedition in 1841. Certainly a more effective method of showing large scale detail than placing each island group in a gigantic map of the Pacific!
Six other maps of island groups are also shown on the image; charted by European and American explorers in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. New Zealand, the Samoan Islands, Society Islands, Marquesas Islands, Galapagos, Fiji and Tongo are all included: hand colored and showing topographical relief, towns, and reefs.
