Description
This impressive wall map presents an engaging overview of one of America’s most important coastal areas – Hampton Roads. Issued in 1932 by the State Port Authority of Virginia, the image portrays Newport News and Norfolk as the twin pillars of a unified harbor system, encompassing military, industry, and recreational facilities alike.
Bright red overprinting highlights the lifeblood of the area, the railroad lines, running to numerous piers along the shore. Circled numbers refer to the index in the upper right, which provides an interesting list of major local industrial partners. Various geographic features and locations of interest are labeled throughout, including Langley Field, recently completed (1928) James River Bridge, Pig Point Ordnance Depot, the Cape Henry Lighthouse, and the County Poor Farm.

Condition Description: Color printed map on a large single-sided sheet of paper. Creasing and light wear along old folds, with several marginal splits repaired on the verso with archival tape. A bit of edge wear and several tiny pinholes in the lower enter of the image. Small blue markings in the index, upper center, and a bit of faint spotting, lower left. Good to very good condition overall.
