Description
Between 1880 and 1910, America witnessed a transformative period of rail growth that played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s industrial landscape. The construction of several transcontinental railroads facilitated the westward expansion, connecting the East and West coasts and fueling rapid economic development.
Regional networks grew to access a wealth of local natural resources, agricultural products, and livestock being produced in towns established at a rate faster than they could be put on the map. Interurban railways moved people from suburban areas into large cities and beyond. During this time, railroad mileage more than doubled, reaching over 240,000 miles by 1910.
This detailed map of the United States was published in New York by C.S. Hammond & Company around 1913, based on the census data provided for the index on the verso. A spiderweb of railroads connects all but the most remote regions of America, with settlements large and small scattered across the image. The size of a place name indicates its relative importance, according to text in the lower left.
