Description
“The Hagstrom Company has for many years been world famous for guides and maps for every purpose; commercial maps, city guides, road maps, maps of the world, maps for every conceivable use. This catalog includes a specialty group designed for their decorative, historical, religious, and educational value.” – pg. 4.
Pictorials and pirate maps, outer space and fantastical worlds, Biblical figures and bootleggers – this uncommon catalog advertises an incredible variety of maps for sale by the Hagstrom Company of New York. The contents are organized into themes; including geographic regions (U.S. and world), humor, sports/recreation, stamp maps, and children. The works of well-known pictorial cartographers like Ernest Dudley Chase, Jo Mora, Karl Smith, George Annand, and Daniel Wallingford are sold alongside lesser-known artists such as Mary Leader, Malvina Hoffman, and Garner Osborn.
Most items are offered in different formats – rolled in a tube, mounted on linen and rods, or as a lacquered wall plaque (the most expensive). Notable examples include America the Wonderland, John Drury’s Mem-O-Maps, The Land of Make Believe, and the Illustrated Map of Dogs (the priciest map in the catalog). Several of the entries are labeled as Out of Print, while others, like Baby Land by Edith Tunnel, are practically unknown on the market.
