H. Carly’s Grosser-Plan von Hamburg

Hamburg, Germany at the turn of the century.

This somewhat crudely lithographed map of Hamburg was designed around 1901 by H. Carly and published in conjunction with the firm of Oscar und Robert Enoch. Huge port facilities reflect the presence of the Hamburg-America Line, at the time one of the world’s largest transatlantic shipping companies. Railways, fire stations, important buildings, and historic sites are also emphasized throughout the image. An inset in the lower left shows a plan of the famed Zoological Garden of Hamburg, while a second inset (upper right) presents the massive Ohlsdorf Cemetery.
