Description
During World War II, the United States implemented a rationing system for civilians on the homefront. Issued by the government, the ration books contained coupons that regulated the purchase of essential goods like food, gasoline, and clothing. The primary objective was to ensure the equitable distribution of scarce resources and prevent hoarding, allowing noncombatants to actively contribute to the war effort by conserving supplies. Every individual, including children, received a ration book, and adherence to specified limits was required when making purchases, reinforcing the collective effort to support the war economy.
This collection of ration books and leather holder was used by a mixed family of four in Cleveland, Ohio. Ten different booklets, each signed and partially used, and two application stubs are included in the group.
