Description
According to explanatory text on the verso of the sheet, this aerial photograph was taken by Captain Albert Stevens from a U.S. Army airplane at 26,000 feet. It purports to show an area exceeding 3,000 square miles in size and encompassing a population of nearly 10 million individuals. “It provides in a single photograph a bird’s eye view of America’s foremost port, largest city, greatest population center, and the many historic, scenic, industrial and engineering wonders of that area.” The wide angle view gives a fantastic perspective from Staten Island to the distant lands of Connecticut.
On the verso, an 8.5″ x 11″ sketch map labels the general areas seen within the image, with Hartford and New Haven shown to be the cities in the faint and blurry background. Issued as a supplement to the November 1933 issue of National Geographic magazine.
