Description

This charming pictorial map of Juneau, Alaska and the surrounding region was designed and published locally by Rudy J. Ripley in 1965. Just five years later, the city would merge with Douglas (opposite the Gastineau Channel) to become the second-largest municipality in the United States by area (bigger than Rhode Island or Delaware). The illustrated view captures all this and more in a quaint cartoonish style. Numerous locations of interest are shown and labeled, with figures engaged in a variety of recreational activities. Two dozen businesses are numbered throughout the map and identified in the lower half. A directory of merchants and services is provided on the verso.
