Description

This ephemeral map was originally created by the Engineering Department of the Great Northern Railway Company in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1927. A stamp immediately below the printed date in the lower right shows the last update as of August, 1950 – possibly the date of de-accession.

The base map shows a simple street outline of the area between Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington. Townships are numbered and outlined and important buildings (notably transportation infrastructure) is labeled. Manuscript updates throughout the image reflect track ownership and operating rights.

Five different colors identify the lines of Great Northern Railway joint interests, the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway (also owned by the Great Northern), joint S.P. & S. and Northern Pacific, United Railways and the Oregon Electric Railway. Property owned by the Great Northern is also highlighted and outlined in red. Numerous annotations identify real and proposed changes, showing the map was employed as a ‘living document’ during its period of use over approximately 2 decades.
