Description
The Great Escape got its inauspicious start in 1954 as Storytown U.S.A., a small theme park geared entirely towards children. The first expansion aimed at adults was the Ghost Town, added in 1957. The cornerstones of the park can still be seen in the center of this image, which was issued forty years after Storytown U.S.A.’s opening season.
Growth was evidently significant, with the latest addition in the form of the wooden roller coaster Comet at the top of the page. The ride opened the same year of issue after being purchased and moved from Crystal Beach Park in Ontario. The year after the map was issued, the park would open its water expansion, Splashwater Kingdom.
