Description
This vibrantly illustrated poster presents select ‘Great American Indian Leaders’ from American history. A simple map of the United States is surrounded by five regal portraits of Tecumseh, Pontiac, Powhatan, Sitting Bull, and Osceola. Brief biographies accompany each. Chief Joseph, Red Cloud, Geronimo, King Philip, Black Hawk, and Crazy Horse are all notable omissions worth mentioning.
The poster, signed in the lower right, was created by an artist named M. Andre and published by the Pontiac Motor Company around 1960. Pontiac issued a number of Native American-themed promotional posters during the 1950s and 1960s, intended for distribution at local dealers. Apart from the association with the company name, the advertisements may have been issued to co-opt public interest in Native American identity, which was undergoing a transformation during a period of federal efforts at assimilation.
