Description

This fascinating road map covers a large region of California approximately bounded by the cities of Salinas, Santa Maria, Bakersfield, and Fresno. Paved highways and oiled roads are highlighted in red, while streets made of gravel or dirt are shown in black. Of note is the highway running along King’s River, shown as under construction. Distances between points and the elevation of primary cities are noted, reflecting the often minute calculations required during the early eras of automobile tourism.

Grant Grove and Sequoia National Park, two popular contemporary tourist attractions, are identified, specifically in the title and image, though a number of interesting locations of interest are labeled. Examples include Pierson’s Dude Ranch, several hot springs, the ruins of the San Antonio Mission, and the California Institution for Women. Information on Sequoia National Forest, lists of recommended hotels, and distance tables for primary highways are provided on the verso.

Published and copywritten around 1946 in San Francisco by the California State Automobile Association. C.S.A.A. branch offices are noted throughout the image with bright red stars.
