Grand Panoramic View of the Heart of Chicago
Original price was: $1,250.00.$1,000.00Current price is: $1,000.00.
A breathtaking panoramic view of Chicago published for the 1893 World’s Fair.
Description
This fantastic snapshot of Chicago’s business district was captured by George W. Melville to accompany his publication “Gems of Wonderful Chicago and the World’s Fair.” The view of the city is from the top of Melville’s publishing headquarters in the 16 story Monadnock Building – one of the tallest load-bearing brick buildings in the world and recently constructed in 1891.
It shows a complete 360-degree panorama of the city and includes landmarks like the Board of Trade, Palmer House hotel, the Art Institute (labeled New Art Palace) and the Rookery. Bustling streets, Lake Michigan crowded with ships of all kinds and belching smokestacks filling the horizon reflect the spirit of industry and animation that Chicagoans were so proud to display at that year’s Columbian Exposition.
The accompanying 87-page book is bound in blue cloth and contains numerous photographs of structures at the fair and detailed descriptions of the various exhibitors. At the back of the volume is a 12″ x 12″ map of the grounds, drawn by chief draughtsman H. Heinze. Apparently, this plan was produced in haste, as it exhibits a number of errors in spelling and numbering.
