Description

This vibrant pictorial map of Europe and most of Asia was issued as a promotional item by Menier Chocolat, one of the world’s leading chocolatiers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The company was also a pioneer in modern advertising and issued this piece to boost sales near the end of the candy corporation’s commercial success.

Pieces formerly affixed to the bottom of the sheet could be sent to Menier for a prize (with corresponding proof of purchases). The accompanying eye-catching image shows a grand auto tour across both continents. A circuitous route from Paris to Shanghai is interspersed with colorful vignettes showcasing local culture, animals, geographic features, and architecture.

The pleasing aesthetic was designed by J.B. Jannot (a.k.a. Jan-Loup, signed lower right) and published by Agence Francaise de Propagande in 1956.
