Description

Though dated 1754, this lovely map of the Provence region in France was likely first issued in the 1757 edition of Robert de Vaugondy’s Atlas Universel, published in Paris. It shows the historic region along France’s southern coast in some detail; naming numerous towns, cities, and chateaus and abbeys and depicting relief pictorially.

Nice, Marseilles, Nimes, Avignon, Cannes, and Toulon can all be found within the image, which features a large decorative cartouche in the lower left. Flanking either side are two well dressed individuals, perhaps referring to the local textile industry, or as Provence’s reputation as a vacation haven for the wealthy elite of France.
