Description
This detailed cadastral map of Goliad County shows the various oil and gas infrastructure scattered across the county in southeastern Texas. Oil, gas, drilling, and abandoned wells are noted according to the legend in the lower left. Geographic features are also labeled.
Property owners and leaseholders names are noted on individually outlined parcels. A manuscript distance scale on the left side indicates that 1″ = 2000 var. This obsolete unit of measurement originated with the Spanish Empire and was used in many Texas land grants.
The map was created and published anonymously. Difficult to date conclusively, but the first oil wells were drilled in Goliad County in the late 1920s and the Galveston, Harrisburg & San Antonio Railway seen running through the center of the page merged with the Texas and New Orleans in 1934, giving approximate bookends of 1929 – 1934.
