Description
This detailed chart was published in Washington, D.C. in 1942 by the Army Map Service, shortly after the United States’ entry into World War II. Color illustrations outline the various components of the uniforms of the German Wehrmacht. Caps, unit insignia, shoulder and sleeve patches, and color schemes are all explained visually with great clarity for both regular soldiers and officers.
Successfully identifying enemy units was one of the most effective ways to combat friendly fire, a serious issue for green American troops in the North African theater around the time of publication. Though the chart’s use in Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, and Algeria may have been limited – the uniforms of the German Afrika Corps were tan, rather than grey.
