Description

“Since its inception in 1837, the Ohio Geological Survey has been the principal source of geologic information in and about Ohio. These data, gathered during a 141-year period under the direction of ten state geologists, constitute more than 30,000 printed pages and numerous maps describing and illustrating Ohio’s geology and mineral resources. This information has, perhaps more than any other factor, been responsible for the development within the state of important industries that rely upon mineral commodities derived from Ohio’s bedrock and glacial sediments.” – Hansen & Collins.

This uncommon volume was issued by the Geological Survey of Ohio and printed in Columbus by Nevins & Myers, State Printers, in 1871. It contains three reports reflecting frenetic activity in the organization in the years following the Civil War, as the statewide coal and iron resources helped to fuel the reunified nation’s industrial development.

The contents are: Part IReport of Progress in 1869 by J.S. Newberry, Part IIReport of Progress in the Second District by E.B. Andrews, Part III – Report on Geology of Montgomery County by Edward Orton. The book also includes Preliminary Geological Map of Ohio, a Chart of Geological History, and (large) Map Showing the Lower Coal Measures in Portions of Athens, Hocking, Perry, Locking, & Muskingum Counties.
