Description
This woodblock engraving was based on a sketch by Theodore Davis and published in the November 28, 1863 issue of Harper’s Weekly – just three days after the rout of Confederate General Braxton Bragg’s Army at the top of Missionary Ridge.
Faint puffs of smoke in the far background allude to the location of the Rebels, “beyond the belt of timber”, while the foreground features the Union signal station and an artist sketching in the lower left. Possibly a self-portrait?
