Description
This attractive postwar wood engraving was extracted from the May 16, 1868 issue of Harper’s Weekly, published in New York. It shows the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church that took place in Chicago, Illinois that year.
Delegates from the U.S., Canada, England, and Ireland met at the Clark Street Methodist Church. The meeting overlapped with the Republican National Convention that month – hotel space must have been at a premium in the Windy City!
